UKRAINE APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP OF NATO
Following the deployment of thousands of Russian troops
on the eastern borders of Ukraine in early April 2021, the Ukraine government
has requested NATO to allow it to join the organisation. Russia has
indicated that this is an escalation of military threats in the region.
Joining NATO would provide Ukraine with the military
protection of western powers against any Russian invasion of
Ukraine. However, NATO does not normally allow countries to join
when they are in the throes of an international conflict.
