It was reported in the newspapers on 2 April that some
4,000 Russian troops had been deployed to the Russian side of the Ukrainian
border, next to the two Ukrainian regions in which a war has been continuing
since 2014 with some 15,000 dead so far.
After Crimea was annexed and made part of Russia in
2014, pro-Russian fighters in Donetsk and Luhansk started a war against the
government of Ukraine with backing from Russia. Russian intentions
behind this troop deployment are unclear but both Ukraine and the USA have been
asking Russia unsuccessfully for clarification of its position.
