DUNBLANE MASSACRE

For the 25th anniversary of the horrific massacre of small children at a school in Dunblane, here is a sonnet I wrote about the event.

The sun is sinking low and soon the night will fall,
But how I wish the dawn had never come at all.
Last night our happy laughter filled the house till ten.
Now my lovely child will never laugh again.

Tears have filled my eyes and cascaded down my cheek.
All of me is sobbing and all my body weak,
While Jamie lies on marble at eternal rest,
Unbreathing, unseeing, and with a bullet in his chest.

He is only six years old;  he hasn’t harmed a soul.
His skin is fair, his eyes are grey, his hair as black as coal.
He wants to be a sailor and race in a big white yacht.
Is that a crime so dreadful that he should be shot?

Last night we played a game before he went to bed.
Today he played a different game: “Bang! Bang! You’re dead”.
